2011 Germany Trip: Frankenthal

Another day we visited a walled town.

Standing with friends

The castle fort

Inside the courtyard with stone walls

There was a tower at each corner of the town and the castle was at the highest corner.

Courtyard, town houses, fields in distance and wind turbines

Another corner's tower is beyond the indolent cat.

Cat sleeping on stone wall overlooking fields

Overlooking the valley. Lots of grapes are grown in the region for wine.

Standing at wall overlooking green fields

We had a fun group and lots of laughing while we were exploring!

Five gals laughing as they sit on the guard wall

This house was wonderfully asymmetrical.

Standing together in front of traditional-style house

We all thought this might have been like the house that Hansel & Gretel could have been kept in.

Tall traditional house with flowers on hill

Then on to a different place with a ruined church that had been part of an abbey. It was the largest one in Germany at the time.

Grassy area with brick walls around and chairs

It was the victim of a war a long time ago and burned for 12 days.

Trees, ruined columns, walls around grass

One more place on this day: An archeological site of a Roman farm villa.

Low brick wall layout of ancient house site

The storage cellar. There also was underfloor heating. The Romans had good technology.

Open basement area with bricke arched connecting passages

Our guide had been Victor Fast, a passionate historian who is skillful and interesting. We had dinner on the Fast's patio - very pleasant. This was a characteristic pose for Viktor. He can be as expressive with his hands as with his words.
